Scammers target indie authors

A few years ago, I got an email supposedly from a very famous movie producer. I mean very famous. The gist of the email, which was obviously from a bogus email account at gmail (any valid email would come from the company's email address), was that he was so impressed with my book, he wanted to explore the possibility of making a movie of it.

Wow, awesome. Except, I knew it was a scam.

This excerpt is from Writer Beware:

An increasingly frequent fraudulent tactic is impersonation: of reputable literary agents, major publishers, renowned movie production companies, even bookstores and organizations like the American Booksellers Association. The aim is to convince you that you’re on the cusp of real, reputable representation, publication, immortality on the silver screen, books on shelves nationwide…there’s just something you have to pay for first (a screenplay, a “cinematic trailer”, an IP lawyer to handle contracts, “book licensing”, a “book returnability program“, an appearance fee…the list is endless). Once the scammer gets you on board, it’s open season on your bank account: you will be heavily pressured to spend more and yet more money on goods and services that may be hugely overpriced, entirely fictional, never actually delivered, or all three.

The scammers try to get you to make contact, and as stated above, pressure you into spending money for . . . nothing. I mean nothing.

If you're a writer and you get emails like these, trash them immediately. do NOT engage.

There are also scammers who impersonate famous authors. They give your book flowery praise (probably from AI) and say they just want to "connect" with you to talk about writing. As above, if you reply, they "recommend" an "agent" or "editor." And the money starts leaving you.

Beware.

Even if you’re not interested in the audio book, perhaps you know someone who might be.

In any event, thank you for your support!

Oh, and at least take a look at the fantastic NEW cover (below) by the talented David M. Jones (Jonesy’s namesake).

Weird writer almost mistakes

When I was writing Operation Devil's Fire, I had a French character with a dog. I wanted to name the dog Rover after my uncle's dog in my childhood.

Then I realized a French person wouldn't name a dog Rover. So in the book, he was named Beaux.
Uncle Hugo's Rover looked something like this guy:

A day in a writer's life

I'm working on Sgt. Dunn Novel #23, which is untitled as yet.

I published Sgt. Dunn Novel #22, Careless Enemies, on May 11, 2026. It ranked #10 in War Fiction a week later. Thank you readers!

Since then, I have researched Korean War U.S. Rangers' actions for interesting ideas. I have three and am looking for two more.

Today I'll be using Google Earth to find real locations for actions in Korea and filling in the plot ideas with two or three sentence descriptions This allows me to write the chapter freely and creates spontaneous ideas, while keeping the main points on target.

Here's an example of my plot spreadsheet. Yes, I use Excel, and have done that since the first book, Book 1, Operation Devil's Fire, which is what you see a portion of below.

Check back some time to see what else I'm up to in a day of a writer's life.

Announcing the new Sgt. Dunn Novel, #22 – Careless Enemies, is now available on Amazon!

Hi Sgt. Dunn readers!

I'm delighted to announce the release of Sgt. Dunn Novel #22, Careless Enemies. The description is below. It's now available on Amazon!

Thanks for your support and happy reading!

Ronn

Careless Enemies Description

Careless Enemies picks up three days after Against All Enemies ends. While on the way to Captain Tom Dunn’s commanding officer’s office, Dunn and his executive officer, Lieutenant Pete Ramsey, have a touching encounter with a South Korean civilian.

Their first mission is a simple reconnaissance patrol to find and destroy any North Korean Army units present in the target area. Except it isn’t simple. After three hours behind the enemy’s lines, a frustrated company takes a rest while Dunn devises a new plan. It’s high risk. Will it work?

Blowing up a dam is not for the faint at heart. Fortunately, Dunn has some experience with this as in Raid On Hitler’s Dam. The central problems is how does Dunn get his men back from a point seventy-seven miles north of the front line? His solution is as unique as he is.

The company is assigned to man a roadblock near headquarters and watch for enemy guerrillas, who have been crossing the line and creating havoc in the area. Also under their watchful eyes is a medical aid station. Problems begin almost immediately, and not all are from the enemy. Can the company stop the guerrillas and protect the medical aid station?

While on another reconnaissance mission, the company travels behind the enemy lines again to determine what units are present in Wolun-ri. Fighting snow and an unexpected enemy force, can Dunn lead the men to the city and complete the mission?

Traveling back to the American front line, Dunn and the company happen upon perhaps the greatest targets of opportunity they’ve yet seen in Korea. The difficulty is how, exactly, can they destroy all of the targets?

Later, Dunn appears on camera for a newsreel. Who will see this wonderful moment back in the United States? And what happens because of it?

Some old friends appear and update us on their civilian lives in early 1951.

In Careless Enemies, Munsterman continues to display just how important the United States’ presence was to the South Koreans. Blending historical fact and fiction, he shows us Tom Dunn and his men in action. In his page-turning style, he gives us another compelling story of how courageous and determined men conduct the war with honor and dignity.
